Can we know or find God in nature?
Contained in the book called the Bible is a letter written to some people in the city of Rome, Italy. The writer, the Apostle Paul, made some really startling statements concerning this very idea: Seeing God in nature. In his letter to those in Rome, in the first chapter, he said that what can be known about God is “plain” to see in nature. What he did not say was that God was nature (or that nature was God). What he said was that by looking at nature we can see the “fingerprint” of nature’s creator. In essence, creation reflects some of the qualities of the Creator.
I build furniture. I love it. It’s my therapy. But my furniture is not me. My furniture reflects some of me, but it is not all of me. There is more. Much more. But by looking at what I make you can learn something about me.
Paul also said that Gods’ invisible qualities are evident in what God made. One of those qualities that Paul listed was “eternal power”. The word “power” in the original Greek language carries an awesome meaning: miraculous power, mighty deed (or work). It is obvious that “eternal” means what it says: forever and ever and ever.
I grew up in a rural part of the United States and I can attest to the magnificence and magnitude of a night sky so black and filled with stars that to imagine eternity is not at all difficult. I’ve seen the Grand Canyon and its’ vastness is disorienting. It is nearly impossible to estimate distance as you gaze out over a landscape so unique and beautiful that to simply ascribe erosion as the cause almost betrays the artistry.
Can anyone “prove” God through nature? Absolutely not! It is not possible and would be a stretch for someone to say otherwise. But, the opposite seems equally a “stretch”. To see nature and NOT see God seems to take too much to explain God away.
God Bless,
"For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ." John 1:17
At Hope we fully recognize the importance of the Law of God. But we also know that old Law has been superseded by a new one: Jesus. He no longer requires external behaviors as a sign of spirituality. He longs for and offers a transforming liberation of the hearts of man. Come join us as we grow in His grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Find out what real freedom can mean to you.
Blessings,
